SANT KABIR - New award introduced for handloom artisans

Office of development commissioner for handlooms introduces SANT KABIR awards for handloom artisans। Like shilpguru award is meant only for the handicrafts people, SANT KABIR award is meant only for the handloom artisans. SANT KABIR awards started from 2009 onwards. The award will be conferred to any handloom weaver, who has either received the national or state award, national merit certificate or a handloom weaver of extraordinary skills who has contributed significantly to the promotion, development and preservation of weaving tradition and welfare of the weaving community and who is not below the age of 55 years. The award consists of one mounted gold coin, one shawl, a tamarapatra and a citation. Financial assistance to the extent of rupees 6.00 lacs will be given as grant-in-aid directly to each of the SANT KABIR awardees to innovate and create 10 new products of high level of excellence, of high aesthetic value and of high quality in duration of one year.

Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana for Weavers

The Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana provides life insurance cover to the handloom weavers in case of Natural Death/Accidental Death, total / Partial Disability due to accident. The scheme covers weavers in the age group of 18 to 59 years. Additionally a Scholarship of Rs.300/- per quarter per child studying in Class IX to XII Standard is given to the children of the weavers covered under MGBBY. This benefit is restricted to two children. The benefits available under the scheme during the XI Plan are are shown in the table as under:

This information was given by the Minister of State for Textiles, Smt. Panabaaka Lakshmi in the Rajya Sabha today, in a written reply to a question by Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan.



The Minister further said that all the handloom weavers are entitled to be covered under Health Insurance Scheme and Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana on payment of his/her share of premium and those weavers in respect of whom the premium has been paid to the Insurance Company namely Life Insurance Corporation of India and ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company have been covered under the Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima

Yojana and health Insurance Scheme.

Shilparaman Fair at Hyderabad - 12 to 31

Shilparamam is organizing All India Handi Crafts Mela from 12 to 31 december, handicrafts & handloom artisans will be displaying their handicraft items for sale. There will be nearly 750 stalls and the artisans will be coming from all over India and every evening Shilparamam will be conducting cultural activities like kuchipudi, barathanatyam. The newly constructed night bazaar will be also open over there, mela authority will provide 80 stall to the artisans. Timing for the same will be from 10am morning to 9:30pm. 30 different traditional food stalls will be there welcoming to the visitors and the special officer Mr Janardhan Reddy says this fair is one of biggest one in Asia

Terracotta Exhibition at Chandigarh by HIFA

HIFA, a leading cultural organization of Haryana is organizing Haryana Contemporary Art Exhibition at Chandigarh again a first timer in Haryana for Haryana native artists at Punjab Art Council, Chandigarh, from jan 14 to 17, 2010. The exhibition will cover a broad range of selected art works of all medium like painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, drawing, installation, multi-media and terracotta. The only motive behind this is to bring the Haryanvi talent forward and provide them an appropriate platform for display of their creativity which incidentally has not seen the light of the day either by govem-ment or any other agency till date. Daily cultural programme, will be an added attraction to the event. We are expecting around 25000 visitors along with VVIPs including Chief Minister and Governor of Haryana and neighboring states.

Dayanidhi Maran lays the foundation stone of the Apparel Training and Design Centre at Chhindwara

ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT OF TWO ADDITIONAL HANDLOOM CLUSTERS AT CHHINDWARA

Thiru. Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Textiles has laid the foundation stone of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) at Chhindwara, in Madhya Pradesh today in the presence of Thiru. Kamal Nath, Minister of Road Transport and Highways. The estimated expenditure for setting up of permanent campus is Rs. 10 crore.

While laying the foundation stone, Thiru. Maran indicated that Apparel Industry is in need of 5 lakh trained workers and to impart the requisite skill in the apparel industry, there is a necessity for skill development training centre, such as Apparel Training and Design Centre. He further stated that with the setting up of a permanent campus at Chhindwara for the design centre the intake of the students will increase from 500 to 2,000.

Thiru. Maran also announced during his speech that Rs.1 crore would be sanctioned by the Ministry of Textiles for the holistic development of two existing handloom clusters at Saunsar and Lodhikhera in Chhindwara District and further two additional handloom clusters will be developed, considering the handloom tradition at Chhindwara.

Thiru. Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, acknowledged the fact that the proposed permanent ATDC campus would be a boon to the skill development of textiles workers in this area. Thiru. Kamal Nath recalled the vision with which Thiru. Maran worked in his earlier capacity as Minister of Communications and Information Technology and said that the tempo which the Ministry of Textiles has already assumed under the stewardship of Thiru. Maran hoped will help all the sectors under the Ministry to achieve excellence, paving a way for the country’s textiles sector to position itself eminently in the global textiles scenario.
